Insulin Resistance Profile
Insulin Resistance results from the body’s protective mechanism for preventing high blood glucose levels. It is an extremely common problem that can cause disease and limit life span. Insulin Resistance, also known as syndrome X and metabolic syndrome, is a condition that occurs when the body makes too much Insulin. Insulin is a powerful hormone secreted by the pancreas in order to control the way the body stores and uses carbohydrates in the body. It should be remembered that though Insulin is dangerous in excess it is also vital for the body to function normally and to control blood sugar utilisation. If the body is continuously exposed to high levels of Insulin, the Insulin receptor cells in the liver, adipose (fat) tissue and muscle start
to become inefficient and resistant to the effects of Insulin. As a result, Insulin is unable to carry out its normal role of taking sugar into the cells. The body then recognises that there is too much glucose in the blood and consequently produces
even more Insulin to compensate.
